Spinning up samples!

In March I bought the Phat Fiber Sample Box (You can read more on the Phat Fiber blog).

I got many goodies, including an adorable stitch marker with fresh water pearls (Seen here on my Leyburn Sock), a couple of cute patterns, some yummy yarn samples and some great fiber samples.

I was really looking forward to the fiber samples so I could spend some time with different types of wool and fibers without spending a ton of money. I picked the fibers I liked the least to begin with.

But, as it turns out, I ended up liking the way the fiber spun up. The light green was especially a surprise because I didn't like the roving very much at all. It was fun and I also learned a bit about what certain styles of dyeing will look like when they're spun up. I still have a few samples to spin up (including a 100% silk sample- yum!) so look forward to that too. ;-)

Sooo, Going from left to right we have:


"Sprout"- Hand Painted BFL wool from cloudlover
Thoughts: I'd have liked to ply this but I started spinning it at a worsted weight and I didn't want to end up with a very small amount of super bulky yarn. The wool spun up nicely and I'm quite fond of the finished sample.

"Irish Moss" merino top from natchwoolie (Get it, naturally? They use all natural dyes)
Thoughts: I love the color and the feel of the wool/yarn, but I found the thin strip of top a little difficult to draft, comparatively speaking. Other than that I really like the fiber.

Unidentified cotton candy-y sample. I lost the tag. =( I wasn't fond of the colors, but the wool spun up really nice and soft.

On the spindle:
"Leprechaun" Tweed Roving, Local Coopworth wool blended with multicolored rayon thrums, overdyed from Wild Hare
Thoughts: It's interesting, a little scratchy. I'm planning on doing a 2-ply. We'll see where that leads us. ;-)




And finally, the Correidale wool that Jesh sent me with my spindle. It's going well, but I have a feeling it will take a loooong time to finish!
